Almost Friday! But what about this Friday 23/11/2018? It’s a special day for both customers and shops because it’s Black Friday! The American custom that marks the beginning of the Christmas trade period, has emerged also in Cyprus. This day of outrageous rebates it has become very popular right now.
But have you ever wonder about the name? Why black and not another colour? And why this day of week? Also why it is such a pleasant day for shopping to be identified by the adjective “black”.
As we read in one article of Madata.GR & Rizopoulos Post there are three reasons:
1)According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, all of them have to do with the accounting books of the 1950s. The reason, spreadsheets and receipts were of course handwritten and shops had two ink colors to record the data. In red, the days with a negative sales balance were written, and the days with a positive balance were black.
2)Another theory wants the name “Black” to come from the people in Philadelphia, due to the incredible traffic that the streets had on that day.
3) the first public opinion about the origin of Black Friday’s name was in the Factory Management and Maintenance magazine in November 1951, which stated that the reason he was so named was because official used to cut from their jobs on Friday after Thanksgiving, pretending to have some illness to ensure a four-day holiday.
So are you going to work this Friday?
