Labour day in Cyprus and in my country!
Good morning everyone, I think you noticed that May 1st is coming!
This is the date chosen in many countries to celebrate a very important day. May 1st, as a Labour day, was born to remember the commitment of union movements, and the social and economic objectives achieved by workers after long battles, so it is not only a day to rest, but also to remember.
Everything started, in May 1886 in Chicago, with protests and strikes by workers whose main objective was to decrease working hours to 8 hours a day.
In my country, or rather in Italy, the first celebration of May 1st was in 1890. But for a few years, in the fascist era, this day was brought forward to April 21. The Labour day is now an important celebration in Italy and is a national holiday because it is the day that celebrates the struggles that workers have fought over the centuries in order to have their rights recognized. Every year in Rome is organized a concert on the occasion of this holiday, and every year the concert is attended by a large audience and especially by young people! While in Cyprus the strikes began in 1923 in the mines of the American mining company of Cyprus but the largest strike took place in Amiantos in 1929 and involved many workers, increasing wages and their freedom!
Therefore, Labour day is commemorated in order not to forget all the people who fought to obtain good working and living conditions for all of us and to defend their right to work.
