Not only I love to read a really good book in a quiet space like home or in a park surrounded by nature but I also love very much enter a bookshop to see the imensity of choices to a lot of new and different worlds. So because of that, it is a must for me to find the cypriots bookshops and that’s what I did! I went to a very antique stylish one called Moufflon Bookshop.
This not so big in space but so big in knowledge bookshop is near the city center in Sofouli Street and has a lot of cypriot books and international ones as well. They are also very interested in individual and independent writers.
This bookshop is very interesting because of the many events that it is always having. This is a very important thing. It is a very active move for the readers world and probably making it grow for a community of more readers.
Examples of events that it’s having are book fairs, promoting new or old books from any writer, reading awareness and poetry reads.
I got the privilege to talk with the owner of the Moufflon Bookshop, Ruth, an armenian lady that was borned in Cyprus, studied in Scotland and then came back to this beautiful Island.
Ruth’s brother had a bookshop in front of what is now Moufflon Bookshop but sadly died five years ago and Ruth decided to homage her brother by opening this one.
I asked Ruth what is the target of this bookshop because sometimes it seems to me that a lot of young people are coming less and less to bookshops but Ruth told me the contrary. That actually people from every age comes to her bookshop. It really doesn’t matter the age. The only thing it matters is that they like to read.
I was told a funny and interest story. A young boy that is a painter is very interested in her bookshop for his own art, searching for old books to rip out and combine on his paintings.
I asked her if she finds it pretty or disrespectful and she told me that she doesn’t mind, that art is everywhere and it is nice to blend it all types of art in one. Also the art of a book is not only on the context of the story but also in the asthetics of it, the font, the cover, etc.
It was a very memorable morning that I spent and for sure I’m going to visit more times this amazing place.
