Roadtrip to Lefkara
Being a student (in my case volunteer) is amazing, living in an other country , getting to know another culture , experiencing things that you will remember fondly for the rest of your life. But in the first days , or month, it can be difficult , adapting to your new environment , or finding friends .Having been in this situation myself , i can give you an advice that may prove to be helpful: 1.Join local forums and groups on social media like Facebook , usually they are filled with information about various events that are happening around you and some of them will interest you leading to advice no.2: Dare to participate in those events, it is an opportunity to get to know locals or Erasmus students and explore the area , and have fun!
This is exactly what i did last Sunday , with a friend, I joined an ESN (Erasmus Student Network) event called “Feast like a Cypriot” after seeing it on Facebook. We went to the meeting point, not knowing what to expect and met some amazing people, locals and Erasmus students . We travelled by car , to a winery were we learned about the process of making wine and tasted various wines one of which was Commandaria , a really sweet wine that is produced near Troodos mountains, also ate a traditional chewy sweet made out of grape juice called Soutzouko. After that we ventured into Lefkara , a village with such a graphic view, it was amazing, so peaceful and calm, i wish i could’ve stayed there longer. As the time of departure was getting closer we came upon an old man making Loukoumades , using the traditional way, oh-my-goodness words cannot describe the taste. It was happiness in a bite.
And then we finally made it to the food, we did a BBQ with souvlakia, seftalies, salates, pites, haloumi and mashrooms , the food was delicious and so much! The best thing was that we were laughing and learning more about each other. It was simply extraordinary.
So i tell you, go and explore , find people with similar interests and such. Don’t be afraid, give it a chance!
